\u201cEmpathy\u201d is the profound ability to understand and share the feelings of others, and it is absolutely essential for building meaningful social bonds. So, are we naturally born with this ability?<\/p>\n
According to psychological research, human beings begin to show the first signs of empathy at a very early stage of life. Even from birth, infants may start crying simply when they hear another baby cry, and by around 6 months of age, they begin to actively mimic the facial expressions of those around them. This initial stage is known as \u201cemotional contagion.\u201d At this point, while infants can instinctively sense and mirror the emotions of others, they do not yet fully comprehend them on a cognitive level.<\/p>\n
Around the age of 2, children begin to demonstrate clearer signs of genuine empathetic concern. For instance, they might spontaneously offer a toy to a peer in distress or attempt to comfort a child who is crying. During this pivotal period, the core foundations of empathy\u2014recognizing that someone else is experiencing an emotion and feeling a desire to help them\u2014become increasingly prominent.<\/p>\n
Then, by preschool age, this sense of empathy deepens significantly. Children start to realize that different people have entirely different ways of thinking and feeling. They begin to apologize sincerely when they hurt someone, become increasingly aware of how their own actions affect others, and start to act with genuine consideration for their peers.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, between the ages of 6 and 12, children develop what is known as cognitive empathy. This involves fully understanding another person's unique perspective and emotional state, as well as learning how to effectively manage their own emotions within various social situations. During adolescence, they further refine this ability to understand and express empathy within complex social contexts. They also become much more conscious of how to empathize with people outside their immediate community, extending their awareness toward broader social issues.<\/p>\n
Since humans are inherently social beings, empathy serves as a crucial element in establishing trusting relationships with others.
