Understanding Fever (Part 4)
24.05.2026

This time, we’ll discuss febrile seizures—a common concern when children have a fever.
When a child’s temperature rises, they may experience a febrile seizure (commonly known as a “fever seizure”). These seizures are most common in children between 6 months and 5 years of age. It’s natural to wonder if bringing the fever down quickly might prevent a febrile seizure. Unfortunately, numerous studies have shown that, as of now, using fever-reducing medication early on when a fever develops does not prevent febrile seizures. In other words, there is no need to panic or worry that “if I don’t bring the fever down, a seizure will occur.” Please rest assured that most febrile seizures resolve within five minutes, and such brief seizures do not cause brain damage. Also, seeing a child having a seizure right in front of you can make you anxious, thinking, “They might die.” However, a typical febrile seizure is not life-threatening. The most important thing is to stay calm. Lay the child down on a flat, safe surface, loosen their clothing, and gently turn their head to the side in case they vomit, to prevent choking. Holding the child down or putting your hands or objects in their mouth can actually make things worse.
Now, let’s get back to the topic at hand. How should you care for a child with a fever? Antipyretics are available to reduce fever. The benefits of fever reduction include: 1) alleviating discomfort and 2) preventing dehydration associated with fever. “Is it okay to use fever reducers if my child is asleep but has a fever?” is a common question. Regarding this, a survey of 151 pediatricians conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that 131 respondents (87%) answered, “There is no need to wake the child to administer fever reducers.” This shows that many pediatricians believe that alleviating discomfort (point 1) is the primary purpose of fever reducers, and that ensuring the child gets plenty of rest is crucial.
